Chair Making

“I grew up in a time when pay was food on the table and clothes on your back.”
.
Myron Woody, a seventh generation chair maker, worked with his dad, Max, at Max Woody‘s Chair Shop building chairs every day after school and Saturdays. He was so young when he started working at the shop that he would have to sometimes stand on a stool to reach a machine. Because of this, Myron had accomplished mastery at a very young age.
.
Max, a renowned artisan, built traditional, custom heirloom chairs for the likes of Billy Graham and had a waiting list that was sometimes as long as 20 years. You see, a Max Woody chair was different than any other chair you could buy. When you ordered a chair from Max, he’d hang out and get to know you, and even though you’d have to wait a while to get your chair, you would have made a friend right away. A Max Woody chair came with a legacy and friendship and a blessing from its maker. It was custom built to fit the size and shape of the intended owner, and it was nearly indestructable and could be passed down for generations.
.
This kind of chair could never be mass produced. With no nails and no glue, each chair was meticulously assembled piece-by-handmade-piece and designed for its own special purpose.

Max surely knew that learning to make these chairs would require skills and master craftsmanship, but that wasn’t all it would take to continue his legacy. His legacy was about so much more. It would take a successor with a special heart and an innovative mind to carry on this particular chair-making tradition… Max knew that person was Myron

After high school, Myron went to college and then followed that with a successful career in the furniture industry. He would come home and help his dad at the shop when he could.
.
When Max passed, Myron came home again, but this time to clean out the shop. While there, people kept stopping by to chat or to buy a chair and Myron realized what his Dad always knew… The legacy had to continue and he was the one to carry it on.
